Most horse owners dread clipping their horses and want the job done as quickly as possible. Clipping a horse is tedious, and it generally isn’t the most pleasant chore in the world. You get covered in hair that you can never get out of your clothes, your clippers start to overheat only partway through the job, and no matter how hard you try, your clip job never seems as clean as it should be.
Unless you’re the man in this video. His clip job? It’s a work of art. Can you imagine having the patience and artistic talent required to clip your horse like the one in this video? It’s absolutely amazing.

Even if you don’t have grand aspirations of clipping a work of art into your horse, there are ways that you can make clipping your horse go more smoothly. According to Horse Channel, you should bathe your horse, if at all possible, before clipping him to help remove some of the oil and dirt that will clog your clippers. If you can’t bathe, a horse vacuum is the next best thing. Basically, make sure you start with a clean horse.
As you clip, always oil your blades liberally and frequently. Be patient and go slowly – remember, you can always take more hair off, but you can’t put it back on. It’s also a good idea to dress for the occasion. Try to wear some clothes that will help to reflect the hair, like windbreaker pants and a jacket. And never, ever put on chapstick before you clip your horse – you’ll regret it instantly.
If you truly hate clipping, you can always hire a professional to come in and clip your horse for you. But if you really get a handle on clipping, you can start introducing patterns and other little works of art into your clip jobs, and that’s when clipping starts to get fun.
